Assistant Coach

Having already proven his abilities as a student-athlete as a four-year letter winner at Lander, and as a coach at many capacities, Clark McCarthy makes his transition to the PDL coaching world as an assistant coach with the SCUFC Bantams soccer team, while also serving an important role in the goalkeeper training.

A goalkeeper for the Bearcats, McCarthy played an integral part in 4 straight runs to NCAA Tournament appearances, including a 2005 run that concluded in the NCAA quarterfinals. During his stint in Greenwood, S.C., Lander captured the 2005 Southeast Region title, and the 2006 Peach Belt Conference regular season and tournament championships. Bearcats were also listed in the NSCAA Top 25 during each of his 4 seasons.

During his time as a student-athlete, McCarthy also served a dual role as an assistant coach at Greenwood High School as the head coach for the junior varsity squad, as well as an assistant with the varsity team. As the head goalkeeper trainer for both programs, he helped lead the Eagles to a phenomenal season in 2008 – one which included an 18-3 record, as well as a region championship and a spot in the state quarterfinals. He also served as the head coach of the girls team at Ridge View High School in Columbia, S.C. following graduation.  McCarthy is currently in his third year as the head men’s soccer coach at Dreher High School in Columbia, S.C., while holding down club coaching stints with SCUFC and the South Carolina Olympic Development Program.

McCarthy graduated magna cum laude from Lander in 2009 with his bachelor’s degree in physical education after maintaining a 3.76 cumulative grade point average. He was a four-time honoree on the Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll, a four-time dean’s list designee and a member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society. He has served a role as a substitute teacher in the Richland County (S.C.) School District, as well as a practicum at Brewer Middle School in Greenwood.

McCarthy currently holds his “C” coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation and earned his level I goalkeeping diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) earlier this year. He currently resides in Columbia, SC.  He is engaged to be married on June 1, 2013 to Christina Greene.
